Guohua Street(國華街), Tainan (1)

In my opinion, Guohua Street is the best street for finding street food in Taiwan. The Japanese magazine BRUTUS also used Guohua Street as the cover of their latest published magazine "101 things to do in Taiwan." Taking a stroll to this street, you could not only sampling delicacies but experience Taiwanese culture. In this article, I'm not going to introducing the history, but recommend some ultimate street food for you.

Jiang Chuan Braised Pork Rice (江川肉燥飯)

People usually start at the intersection of Minzu Road (民族路) and Guohua Street (國華街). The first restaurant I would like to share is Jiang Chuan braised pork rice (江川肉燥飯).  Braised pork rice is one of the must-eat Taiwanese street food. In my point of view, it is one of the top ten delicious braised pork rice in Taiwan. I divide the criteria into three parts: rice, sauce and others. I give points to  each criteria, one is the lowest and ten is the highest.

Rice: 9 →Except "perfect," I could not figure out any word to comment it. I could clearly every single rice, which means that the rice is properly cooked. The rice is chewy, and it is so scrumptious that  I bet I could eat it solely.

Sauce: 7 → The sauce is not as good as the rice, but it's still not bad. People in Tainan like to add sugar in dishes. Therefore, I could taste the sweetness of the sauce. The braised pork itself is tender. It is really good at the beginning, but when I keep eating it, I feel a little bit greasy.

Others: 8 → I have been to this restaurant several times. In the past, the braised pork is mixed with some coriander, but I don't know why this time they don't add it. The 8 points are for the coriander. In my opinion, adding coriander is a fantastic way to mitigate the greasy of the pork.

A Song Steamed Bao Bun (阿松割包)

Steamed Bao Bun is also a famous Taiwan street food. Nowadays, there are also some restaurants serving "bao" in UK. Steamed bao buns is like sandwiches or hamburgers. The difference is that instead of using toast or buns, people use steamed buns to sandwich the stuff.
Walking into Guohua Street, you could immediately see A Song Steamed Bao Bun on your right side. There is no exaggeration that I think  A Song Steamed Bao Bun is the most delicious Bao in Taiwan.

Pig tongue bao is highly recommend, so exactly i order it. The stuff is simple, only pig tongues and suan cia (酸菜, pickled cabbage). You may be really curious about how pig tongue taste. Actually, it is not as weird as you think. Look at the photos below, you could see the side of pig tongue is pink and the middle of it is grey (the same color as pork), the pink side has special texture; it is hard to describe it, a little chewy and a little crispy. Chewing it also makes some strange sound, but anyway i think it is not bad. Except the pink side, the rest of it just tastes like pork. The suan cia is a little sweet and crispy. The bun is fluffy, the inner side of the bun is brushed with peanut sauce (normally, people add peanut powder instead). The peanut sauce is incredible, it is not as gooey as peanut jam, and I could taste the sandy texture of peanut powder while eating it. The combination of the three ingredients is amazing. I have no idea if I could find a better bao better than this!!
