In my opinion, traveling is not only for
relaxing and spending time with friends and family. While enjoying the
delicacies, scenery or the joy with friends and family, traveling is also a
great chance for me to know culture and history. Knowing the history can make
the trip more enjoyable and meaningful. Therefore, in this blog, I will not
only share my trip but introduce the culture and history about the place I
visit.
The tourist I'll introduce today is Beimen
(北門) which is one of the district in Tainan. Beimen is well known for
salt. Since it is near the sea, in the past, local people made salt for living.
In 2014, to boost the tourism, governments built a church called "Crystal
Church (水晶教堂)" in Beimen. The church is an
imitation of the Crystal Church of St. Laguna Chapel in Guam. Since then,
people, especially couples, like to go to Beimen to take a picture with the
church.
Rather than the imitation one, I still
appreciate more about Taiwanese culture and history. Taiwan used to be occupied
by Japan. Therefore, some Japanese Style buildings can be seen in Taiwan. The
picture bellow is the salt syutsyiuzyo (出張所 しゅっちょうじょ) .
It is common to see the three words when I visit
the places near the sea in Tainan. Syutsyouzyo is a place for tax. Namely, the
salt syutsyouzyo is the place to tax on salt.
There is a vender selling roasted sweet
potatoes near the salt syutsyouzyo. To be honest, I don’t like sweet potatoes
very much; however, the roasted sweet potatoes here are different. The pulp is
golden yellow, and it is not only sweet but a little bit chewy. I strongly
recommend you to try it if you visit here!

回覆刪除I really enjoy reading your blog!
刪除In fact, I have never been to the Crystal Church before, and not until today do I know that this is an imitation of the Crystal Church of St.Laguna Chapel in Guam!
I visited the salt syutsyouzyo with my cousins last year. It is truly an interesting place, and it indeed has a close relation with the history of Tainan. I especially like the "birthday salt." Do you know it? There are various colors of salt and each color represents a day in a year. Some of the colors are so beautiful!
Oh and the sweet potatoes look really delicious! I will try some when I visit there next time!
I am looking forward to your next article!
Actually, I have no idea why governments built an imitation one instead of designing a building with local culture.
刪除I have bought the "birthday salt" in the syutsyouzyo, and I also think that it is a special gift for friends.
I read your article when I am really hungry......
回覆刪除I have not been to Beimen since I came to Tainan, but after seeing your introduction, I would like to visit there someday.
Hope to see more place worth going in Tainan so that I will not stay in the dorm all the time while I am free.
You should go out more! Now I always regret that I seldom took a trip in Tainan in my freshman and sophomore year.
刪除I am also a fans of traveling. Somehow, lots of my close friends complained to me that there is nothing fun in Tainan. And they even implied that Tainan is not a tourist place but a place for elders for their retirement only. Maybe I should share your article with them :)
回覆刪除I can't believe that! Tainan is the city with interesting culture, meaningful history and delicious food. You must tell them.
